Eugene Field became South Dakota’s first A+ (arts plus academics) school in the fall of 2001. Daily art instruction is fundamental in the philosophy of A+ schools and not just for music and visual art.

Eugene Field restructured its allowed arts time and divided it equally among drama, visual art, music, and dance. The classroom teachers and arts teachers collaborate to ensure that the curriculum is taught through the arts and the arts taught through the curriculum. The relationship ensures that all children, traditional and non-traditional learners, have an opportunity to reveal their understanding of the standards through a variety of enriched assessment.
